The Area
The beautiful island of Antigua is renowned for its stunning beaches - all 365 of them. Miles of picturesque coves and palm fringed bays surround the island and with its dry climate and plenty of sunshine, this is the perfect destination for sun worshippers, yachtsmen and watersports enthusiasts.

The island also has a wealth of historical interest, for example the cathedral in the capital city, St John's, dates back to the 17th century. Nelson's Dockyard is an 18th century naval station named after Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson who was based there for a number of years.

St John's
The skyline of St John's, the capital and largest city of Antigua, is dominated by the magnificent white baroque towers of St John's Cathedral. With its recently completed cruise ship dock and several hotels, St John's is a lively hub for shopping and dining. For those interested in the early history of the island, there is the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, housed in the colonial Court House.

English Harbour
English Harbour, Antigua's graceful and evocative historic district, is focused on the fifteen square miles of Nelson's Dockyard National Park. Developed as a base for the British Navy in the great age of sail, the harbour served as the headquarters of the fleet of the Leeward Islands during the turbulent years of the late 18th century. Although the dockyard was greatly expanded at that time by Horatio Nelson, it was gradually abandoned in the nineteenth century and was closed in 1889. Today Nelson's Dockyard has been completely restored, and it is now the only Georgian dockyard in the world.

Runaway Bay
A few miles north of St John's, a series of attractive white-sand beaches runs around the island's northwest coast. Most of the tourist development is concentrated along Runaway Bay and Dickenson Bay, where the gleaming beaches slope gently down into the turquoise sea, offering calm swimming and, at the northern end of Dickenson Bay, a host of watersports. Runaway Bay is the quieter of the two and, because there are fewer hotels to tidy up their "patch", is strewn with more seaweed and rocks. It's still a great place to wander in the gentle surf, despite the northern end's erosion by heavy swells.

Falmouth
The main road south from St John's, cutting through the very centre of Antigua, first hits the coast at Falmouth Harbour. This large and beautiful natural harbour has been used as a safe anchorage since the days of the earliest colonists, and the town that sprang up beside it was the first major settlement on the island. Today, though the harbour is still often busy with yachts, Falmouth itself is a quiet place, most of the activity in the area having moved east to English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard, divided from Falmouth Harbour by a small peninsula known as the Middle Ground.

Nonsuch Bay
Just 25 minutes from the capital of St John's, on the southeast side, is one of the best kept secrets of the island. Here La Perla Living have just launched their latest development of villas, townhouses and apartments which are to be built upon the gentle slopes of this beautiful bay. If you love Antigua and would like to be part of the fantastic new development, take the opportunity to visit.

Activities

Sailing has been a central part of Antigua's culture for centuries, ever since the British under Horatio Nelson made English Harbour their Caribbean base. Today, the stately Georgian architecture of Nelson's Dockyard hosts a more pleasure-seeking fleet - international racing boats, recreational yachts and classic sailboats, all in readiness for Antigua's annual sailing week.

For diving enthusiasts, there are hundreds of wrecks to explore and good shelf diving. In January and July the annual windsurfing events are held at Dickenson Bay. One of Antigua's most thrilling activities is to swim with the dolphins, a once in a lifetime adventure. These precious animals are sure to make your holiday unforgettable. The enchanting 'Stingray City' is fringed and protected by its own reef where the delightfully calm, crystal-clear waters make it possible to actually swim with the rays. The unbeatable scenery and pristine coral reef encircling the area enhance this amazing experience, second to none in the world.

Antiguans are more than a little devoted to cricket. The island has historically been a very strong contributor to West Indian and international cricket and the Antigua Recreation Ground is one of the finest places in the Caribbean to take in a local, regional, or international match. Devotees of the game can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum for a look at the infamous cricket bat of Vivian Richards, native Antiguan, former captain of the West Indies Cricket Club and one of the greatest batsmen of all time. Matches can be found almost anywhere on the island, at almost any time.

it's not just cricket!
Although more recently established than its sailing counterpart, Antigua's annual Tennis Week draws an impressive field of international competitors to the island in May of each year. There are two golf courses on the island: an 18-hole, 70-par course at the Cedar Valley Golf Club and another at Jolly Harbour. There are also several riding stables.

Take the opportunity to explore the wilder side of Antigua. Mangrove swamps, bird watching and reef snorkeling are available on the island. Tours take small groups of people to areas off the beaten track. Hiking has not been much developed as an organized activity, although Antigua has many trails and tracks that are well suited to it. Most of the popular hikes lead to one or another of the island's many hilltop fortifications. Much of the appeal of the natural environment in Antigua is the multitude of bird species to be found at Long Island and Great Bird Island, a 20 acre 'jewel in the ocean' with its white beaches, live coral reef and rare wildlife.

You could spend your entire holiday lounging like a seal on the sand but you will need to get up occasionally to eat! Of course, there is an abundance of fresh fish dishes, but Antigua is equally blessed with a wide variety of cuisine ranging from fancy French food to delectable native dishes such as fungi, pepperpot or ducouna. This Caribbean island is bound to help you discover your inner epicure.
